"Knots and links in steady solutions to the Euler equation"


zum Inhalt:

Knotted and linked geometric structures have long played a relevant role 
in fluid mechanics. In this talk we will review some results in this 
direction, focusing on our recent joint work with D. Peralta-Salas on 
the existence of knotted and linked vortex lines in steady solutions to 
the Euler equation in R^3. We will state these results and discuss the 
main principles that lie behind the demonstration, discussing the 
interplay between ideas partial differential equations and dynamical 
systems/differential topology. Time permitting, we will also show how 
these principles can be adapted (through a completely different 
implementation) to show the existence of thin vortex tubes in steady 
Euler flows.
