A talk will be given by
Lukas Heinze
and is entitled:
'Benefit of tensor field visualization techniques for the analysis
of SFRT component design'
Abstract:
In the past years, the mechanical industry started to substitute heavy
metallic parts with more lightweight materials. A common substitute are
short-fiber-reinforced-thermoplastics (SFRT). SFRT parts exhibit a
complex
anisotropic behavior. The design of SFRT components is a non-trivial
task and, as a result, there is huge interest in computational methods
supporting this process. Finite element methods (FEM) are the most used
techniques for structural simulations. After conducting a simulation,
the engineer needs to analyze the results and answer question such as
whether the current design would fail or not. Visual representations of
the simulation data offer a huge benefit for this analysis. Research in
the field of scientific visualization has produced a large variety of
visualization techniques. However, only a few techniques are used by
domain experts in the industry. This thesis intends to facilitate
efforts
to close this gap between simple and well established visualization
techniques on the one side and sophisticated but little-known
techniques
on the other. Therefore, an FEM dataset of a SFRT component is analyzed
with traditional and recent visualization techniques. Both types of
techniques are compared and the advantages and disadvantages are
outlined.
Furthermore, a harmful effect of a common extrapolation method for the
fiber orientation tensor is uncovered.
