An update to NIF sounds like a great idea! I agree that you
should aim to standardize this in the context of the W3C, </div>

<br class="">
NiF 3.0 will mainly fix the obvious things, which are annoying and
make the format simpler. We should be done with it within a week.
Then we can move to W3C with a fresh start.<br class="">

<div dir="ltr" class="">I am not sure of what the best plan for this is,
the options seem to be either:<br class="">
<ol class="">
<li class="">Form a new CG</li>
<li class="">Take this up as a new task for the LD4LT group.<br class="">
</li>
<li class="">Ask the Web Annotation WG if they would be interested in
taking up NIF as part of their spec.</li>
</ol><p class="">Personally, I would recommend the second option, we (LIDER +
FREME) already have a lot of community groups and
standardizing NIF would be a great way to leverage the LD4LT
group.<br class="">
</p>

<br class="">
Ah yes, joining LD4LT is obvious, but did not occur to me before. So
I am really in favor of this. Are there any concerns about joining
this group?<br class="">
Joining Web Annotation WG would be nice, but we are kind of out of
scope there as far as I know.<br class=""></div></div></blockquote><div><br class=""></div><div>I agree, it would probably be hard to standardize NIF in the Web Annotation group, I agree. On the other hand one should at some point probably have a mapping from NIF to web annotation or the other way round. Doing that in LD4LT again sounds the easier way.</div><div><br class=""></div><div>Best,</div><div><br class=""></div><div>Felix</div><br class=""><blockquote type="cite" class=""><div class=""><div bgcolor="#FFFFFF" text="#000000" class="">

<div bgcolor="#FFFFFF" text="#000000" class=""> Dear all,<br class="">
as we are advancing with the FREME project (<a moz-do-not-send="true" href="http://freme-project.eu/" target="_blank" class="">http://freme-project.eu/</a>) we feel
that it is the right time to tackle some issues of NIF 2.0
which make NIF simpler and easier to use.<br class="">
<br class="">
So the roadmap is to change the ontology first and then
update implementations and corpora.<br class="">
<br class="">
Milan, Markus, Martin and me put together a document
showing the changes:<br class="">
<br class="">
<a moz-do-not-send="true" href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/11nuH_xIv-nBsZz50CCj3BxoA84Vu3O7nfTgs1cGotf8/edit#" target="_blank" class="">https://docs.google.com/document/d/11nuH_xIv-nBsZz50CCj3BxoA84Vu3O7nfTgs1cGotf8/edit#</a><br class="">
<br class="">
<br class="">
We consider most of them a clear imrovement, reducing the
size of NIF a lot and fixing ambuigities.<br class="">
<br class="">
The most pressing discussion points are:<br class="">
<br class="">
1. rename nif:referenceContext to nif:context for
simplicity<br class="">
2. move to a W3C community group or even working group<br class="">
3. move the ontology to a w3c namespace, e.g. <a moz-do-not-send="true" href="http://w3.org/nif-core#" target="_blank" class="">http://w3.org/nif-core#</a> <br class="">
<br class="">
All feedback is welcome,<br class="">
